Strange Discovery of DNA in California Revealed

Scientists in California have accidentally discovered a mysterious and extensive DNA structure deep inside the mud in the wetlands.The structure is commonly known as a “Borg,” which is most likely to belong in a single-celled organism, and it carries many genetic factors and DNA segments that are unknown to science.

It is not completely clear what these massive strings of DNA do, but they may help boost up the organisms’ ability to break down the chemicals present in the soil.Jillian Banfield, a senior author, and geo-micro-biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, has written on his Twitter handle that he has never been this excited ever about a discovery since CRISPR.

CRISPR is a ground-breaking gene-editing technology that is based on a mechanism of natural defense found in bacteria.Banfield’s son has suggested the structures as “Borgs” after the famous Star Trek aliens, who had come together and integrated the technology and knowledge of other alien species as well. The researchers have published their findings, which have not yet been peer-reviewed, to the preprint database known as bioRxiv.

Banfield and her team have discovered the Borgs while digging deep in California’s wetlands for fragments of DNA that are involved in the carbon cycle, the process by which carbon is recycled through the environment, according to the journal called Nature.They then recognized that there are 19 different types from California and similar areas to that in Colorado.
