Minnesota Health Authorities Reported 7,133 New COVID-19 Cases

Minnesota lodged 7,133 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, Oct. 5. The health officials said that this was the largest single-day tally of the year. The latest cases were the result of nearly 105,000 coronavirus tests, also a daily high for 2021.

The health officials were sceptical that the number of cases was not reported properly. The new cases were diagnosed over the weekend and a technical delay resulted in not all newly identified infections being reported to the state Department of Health. The remaining cases will be included in Wednesday’s data report. The state releases new pandemic data on each business day and the data released Tuesday is through 4 a.m. Monday. Despite health officials using a staggered reporting schedule since summer, Tuesday’s total is the largest of the year.

Minnesota health officials reported 12 new COVID-19 related deaths on Tuesday. They ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s with nine residing in private homes and three in long-term care. Hospitalizations also surged over the weekend. There are 847 patients hospitalized including 220 in critical condition, up from 821 patients requiring care on Friday.

Minnesota has administered 6.5 million doses of coronavirus vaccine and 3.4 million have gotten at least one dose. About 72% of eligible Minnesota, those 12 and older, have gotten at least one shot.
